What causes Insomnia? 3 Things You Should Know!

Insomnia occurs down to various reasons while sleep deprivation (insomnia) becomes the root cause of various health issues.

Thus, it is a disorder that has a chain reaction on people.

The most common causes of insomnia are stress, irregular sleeping schedule, certain medications, mental health disorders like depression, anxiety and the medications for them, physical illnesses and pain, overthinking, certain unhealthy habits or routines, neurological problems, etc.

Physical, mental, and emotional factors intensify mental/psychological strain in people. The injuries that give excruciating pains cause physical stress while exposed to traumatizing experiences, nerve-racking events, etc.

These circumstances lead people to overthink, consequently giving rise to mental health disorders such as stress. The correlation of all these factors compound the effect, and eventually, it leads to insomnia.

Other mental health disorders namely, depression, anxiety, and illnesses such as asthma, migraine, allergies, heartburn also obstruct quality sleep.

These conditions incite negative thoughts in people and it disturbs the balance of mind.

Even, certain medications taken for these disorders become a catalyst for chemical reactions and changes in the body. On the other hand, not taking certain medications disrupt sleeping too. Besides, it is found that more than 40% of people with insomnia are suffering from any sort of mental health disorder.

Irregular sleeping schedules also create insomnia. Night shift jobs, jet lag disorders primarily change the sleeping habits of people.

The body’s internal/biological clock is known as circadian rhythm. All the body’s activities are adjusted to a pattern of day and night. Yet, night shift workers stay awake during the night,, it deprives them of good sleep.

Jet lag disorder is also the inability to get to sleep due to a quick change of time zones.

This occurs when a person travels across different time zones, it disturbs the sleeping time as the body’s clock is adjusted to the original time zone. Such instances cause short-term insomnia. However, persistent insomnia could be acute.

In addition, certain addictions and unhealthy habits or routines have a huge potential to provoke insomnia. Presently, youngsters are addicted to playing video games, binge-watching movies/TV series, reading novels, listening to music at the night.

So their brain is stimulated to stay awake throughout the night and go to sleep during the daytime. Over napping in the daytime as well causes sleep-onset insomnia.

A healthy grown-up person should sleep at least 6 hours a night. Some people sleep late or sleep less than 4 hours a day. Therefore, they tend to make up for the lost sleep whenever they get time.

Oversleeping for the lost sleep also becomes the reason for sleeplessness in the night as they are unable to adjust themselves to circadian rhythm.

Although we do not pay much attention to the impact that some food and drinks could have on insomnia, drinks such as coffee/caffeine, tea, and alcohol and heavy meals, spicy food, etc. as well deprive you of good sleep in the night.

Coffee/caffeine is a drink that helps people to stay awake throughout the night. Especially, students who engage in higher studies tend to drink coffee so as not to feel sleepy at night.

Alcohol is a sedative drink, yet it disturbs continuous sleep, hence causing sleep maintenance insomnia. Eating heavy food, spicy food makes you feel uncomfortable and harden the digestion process.

Neurological problems are diseases that affect the brain and the nervous system. They are dementia, headaches, Parkinson’s disease, etc. Body pains, numbness, thumping headaches could sabotage sleep in the night.

Discomforts in pregnancy, such as the difficulty to lie on the bed for a long time, constant need to urinate, feeling nausea, breathing issues, an increase in body weight, etc. have become major reasons that, most expectant mothers complain about not getting a sound sleep.

There are other minor reasons that could affect sleeplessness.

Noise sensitivity; the people who have Hyperacusis hear it every day sounds louder than they are. When they sleep, they are unable to maintain a good sleep because of noise disturbances.

Similar conditions occur when someone is weather or light-sensitive.

Presently, some people are used to wearing eye masks as a solution. The feelings such as excitement, fear, hunger, anger more or less disrupt the quality of sleep.

Insomnia comes in different forms and is impacted by numerous reasons. Sometimes a combination of a few reasons makes it chronic.

Therefore, once you noticed that you have trouble sleeping, getting to sleep, you can first try to evade the possible negativities that are associated with this disorder.
